Chapter Chapter II in Perspectives of Elementary Mathematics, 1983, pp 12-23 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract When the system of natural numbers is enlarged so as to yield richer number systems with a wider range of applicability, the first step leads to the system of integers. The gain in computational control obtained from this resides in the fact that, in the system of integers, the operation of adding a fixed number is invertible. In mundane terms, the new facility is the accountability of debts.
