Abstract: Abstract Some mathematical ideas seem as subtle and difficult today as when they were first introduced; others, which could once upon a time be handled only by those with a very extensive training, now seem entirely elementary to us. For example, addition and multiplication of whole numbers was once a skilled occupation, but is today taught to all children.
