Abstract: Abstract The correspondence between Chuprov and Markov marks the coming together of statistics and probability into mathematical statistics in the Russian Empire. As an émigré after the Revolution in Russia, Chuprov worked on statistical dependence, and discovered optimal allocation of a sample between strata.
