Abstract: Abstract In reliability analysis the Weibull distribution and other standard distribution functions have successfully been used to describe the probability of failure of a system as a function of its age, operational time or some other measure of its life time. One is led to choose such distributions because of their fit to experimental data. For systems with extended life times one is confronted with the question how to estimate life time distributions beforehand. The method of accelerated life testing deals with this problem, see Viertl (1983). One has to extrapolate from life time distributions of systems under stress by constructing appropriate acceleration functions. Because of the uncertainty in the validity of the extrapolation, it is worth to use available information about the system in the process of estimating life times under normal and under stress conditions.
