Abstract:
Abstract A simple cost equation has been used to examine the relative importance of various factors in the economics of electroorganic syntheses. It is shown that cells which are currently available commercially can support viable processes for $1.00 lb-1 chemicals in the 100 molecular weight range. Higher value compounds can be very profitable. For lower value compounds, the same equation can be used to drive cell design towards an acceptable financial return.
