Abstract: Abstract As the routine operations of many technical systems become increasingly automated, the roles of the human operators in these systems are becoming more and more oriented towards problem solving. The human operator is required to engage in problem solving when the automation encounters a situation for which it was not designed or, when the automation fails due to hardware and/or software problems.
