Abstract:
Abstract We present a survey of the areas of psychiatric and mental-health research to which statistical theory and methodology can effectively be applied. A brief history of psychiatric statistics is presented, along with a discussion of how this branch of statistics tends to differ from other branches. We describe some important topics of current research and discuss the latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III), the main features of which are its multiaxial approach and its use of explicit diagnostic criteria. The results of a review of the use of statistical methods in the psychiatric literature is included.
