Abstract:
Abstract SLANG is a language designed to provide easy access to a statistical database for users who have little or no programming experience. This language, which can operate in both interactive and batch mode, allows retrieval and descriptive analyses of time series. For more complex analyses, the retrieval capability of SLANG can also be used as a bridge between a statistical database and those commercially available statistical analysis packages which support only sequential input. Design highlights presented in the paper are: a syntax which allows only a small number of statement types, simple data types and a library of functions which users can extend to increase the power of the language. User experience and efficiency considerations are also discussed. SLANG currently operates under IBM’s MVS on a database of international statistics managed by ADABAS.
