A chapter in Strength in Numbers: The Rising of Academic Statistics Departments in the U. S, 2012, pp 187-197 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The events leading to the formation of the Oregon State University Statistics Department in 1957 began with the first pair of redundant statistics courses offered in 1919 and culminated with the demands of the Agricultural College for a strong and centralized statistical service and teaching unit after World War II. The joint residence of the department in the Colleges of Agriculture and Science, and the emphasis of early chairman, Lyle Calvin, on research tied to practical problems played, and continue to play, key roles in the character of the department.
