Abstract: Abstract The history of Statistics at the University of Iowa is recounted, from the hiring of Henry Rietz in 1918, to the formation of the Department of Statistics in 1965, to the present day. The key contributions of Rietz, Allen Craig, and Robert Hogg are described. The prominent role of actuarial science in the development of the department is noted.
