Abstract: Abstract It was one of the very first statistics departments in the United States. Established in 1931 as a spin-off from the Department of Economics, it was called the Department of Economic and Social Statistics, a name that remained until 1964. Along with the social science departments at the University of Pennsylvania, the Departments of Economics, Sociology, and Political Science, its home was in the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce. But unlike those departments, which eventually moved to the School of Arts and Sciences, it remained in Wharton and never moved.
