Abstract: Abstract The modern era of Statistics at the University of Washington (UW) began in 1939 with the arrival of Z. W. (Bill) Birnbaum in the Department of Mathematics. There was but a single course in descriptive statistics. Bill began the process that led to the development of one of the first comprehensive undergraduate statistics programs in the United States.
