Abstract: Abstract The simplest types of measurements are qualitative in nature, meaning that they are non-numeric – or at least numeric manipulation of them is meaningless – and include names, labels and group membership. Examples of qualitative data are ubiquitous, but are best exemplified by dichotomous categorical data consisting of only two possible values, such as a patient’s gender (male or female), diagnosis of a certain disease (positive or negative), or the result from a health intervention (success or failure).
