Abstract:
Abstract Often the best way to understand a subject is to trace its historical development and, pursuing this policy, we note that the word ‘statist’ first appeared in the English language while Shakespeare was a young man (c. 1584). It meant ‘a person knowledgeable in state affairs’ as might be inferred from the quotation above.
