Abstract: Abstract The fifth post-war international congress of mathematicians in Moscow—a heady mixture of mathematics, vodka and caviar, operas, ballets and museums, and the ever present politics of East and West — opened in the enormous Palace of Congresses, a Soviet addition to the sprawling Kremlin of the Russian Czars. The size of the hall was appropriate, for the congress was to be additionally distinguished in almost every aspect of its program by size.
