Abstract:
Abstract In recent years, the area of one-dimensional materials has attracted considerable interest in the international research community and, due to the unique nature of these materials, a broad range of scientists, including chemists, experimental physicists, and theoretical physicists, have been joined together in an attempt to understand the chemical and physical properties of these materials. Since a close collaborative effort between chemists and physicists is required, a simplified understanding of the synthetic techniques is useful. The purpose of this chapter, therefore, is to enable the novice (chemist or physicist) to have at his disposal a collection of synthetic procedures for the preparation of representative one-dimensional materials. These procedures were chosen, by the author, from the sometimes large selection of literature articles, in such a way as to permit the facile synthesis of the desired materials. The literature citations reflect the author’s desire to provide only specific synthetic procedures while at the same time allowing a survey of other possible methods.
