Abstract:
Abstract We finally reap the topological harvest. Topological methods are applied to analyze the solutions of gauge field equations with internal symmetry groups. Different classical solutions are associated with real or hypothetical particles, excitations, vortices. Two classes of solutions are of greatest interest for physics, viz., ’tHooftPolyakov monopoles and instantons, which we mostly consider in the chapter. Even though instanton analogs, two-dimensional pseudoparticles, exist in two-dimensional chiral fields, too, we consider this latter case separately.
