Abstract: Abstract We have seen that the science of statistics is concerned with the interpretation of data in which random variation is present. There are two main aims in the statistical analysis, depending on the purpose for which the data were collected: one purpose is to reach a decision, such as which of a number of varieties of a crop gives a higher yield; another purpose is to summarize the information contained in the data. In either case we are faced with the problem of arguing from the particular to the general; that is, we attempt to argue — say from the particular set of crop yields observed — to a statement of what will generally happen if the experiment is repeated under similar circumstances. The theory of methods of reasoning from the particular to the general with data involving random variation, is called statistical inference. This chapter sets out the basic methods of inference, and a clear understanding of the principles set out here is essential to all that follows.
