Chapter Chapter 12 in Business Research Projects for Students, 1991, pp 205-233 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter presents two commonly used techniques: the questionnaire, and the form of interview in which a questionnaire-like interview guide is followed by the interviewer. It also describes two procedural variants, the postal questionnaire and the telephone interview. All of these techniques are structured. In contrast to the semi-structured techniques presented in Chapter 11, that means that the content and sequence of the questions have been determined in advance and that little that happens as people provide you with answers will make any difference to this. Likewise, the form of answers which you will accept from your respondents is determined in advance. However, this isn’t as inflexible as it might seem. There is scope for the inclusion of some open-ended questions within a fully structured questionnaire, for example, and it is good practice always to provide an ‘other, please specify’ answer category, either explicitly in a questionnaire, or by careful questioning in a structured interview.
