Logic Puzzles
Craig Smoryński
Chapter 2 in Mathematical Problems, 2020, pp 17-53 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Puzzles are here illustrated by logic puzzles. They come in various flavours: simple "deduce the rest" from a partial list of facts, knowledge-based puzzles where one has to incorporate how the characters mentioned in the puzzles should reason in answering a question, to paradoxical puzzles (e.g., the well-known Surprise Exam Puzzle) which cannot be solved. Special topics include a birthday problem that went viral on the internet a few years ago and the relation between some knowledge-based puzzles and serious mathematical developments.
