Abstract:
Abstract Although studies elsewhere have shown that the negative impacts of mining can be mitigated through, among other things, corporate social investment (CSI), there have not been many such studies in developing countries including Botswana whose economic development is very much dependent on mining. The biggest diamond-mining company in the country has a well-documented and well-publicized CSI programme. However, there is little evidence on the impacts and sustainability of the programme. The company’s mines are surrounded by some of the poorest communities in Botswana. Very little is known about the long-term damage caused by mining operations, especially to the environment and water resources. This is largely because of lack of transparency on the operations of the industry. Detailed knowledge about the adverse impacts of diamond mining would be valuable in assessing the company’s CSI when juxtaposed with the industry’s expenditure on social issues.
