Chapter 8 in Focus, 2021, pp 127-141 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The inhibitors described in Chap. 7 can be effectively addressed using a broader and different approach that goes beyond awareness, leadership training, and executive coaching. It involves using seven strategy enablers that represent a mix of specific logic-based reasoning approaches, scientific analysis systems, and strategy processes that can “un-inhibit” the inhibitors. Enablers ensure the strategy process becomes a positive catalyst for strengthening the link between strategy planning and financial performance. Notably, the enablers are not based on the usual prescriptions that making senior executives smarter with better problem-solving abilities will magically improve strategy planning. Rather, the enablers are factors that must be incorporated in the strategy process at all levels: replacing salience-based decisions with a scientifically developed strategy map, working to develop consensus on the components of the strategy map, developing their measures, relying on experts to calculate the give-get weights of each linkage, and then accepting the results of the strategy analysis setting aside one’s ego, biases, and salient thoughts.
