Chapter Chapter 4 in Economy-Wide Assessment of Regional Policies in India, 2021, pp 49-101 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The agricultural sectorAgricultural sector holds strategic importance in propelling India’s socio-economic development thereby appropriately shifting the policy focus from meeting output targets, to generating higher and stable income for the farming population. In this context, the Food Processing IndustryFood Processing Industry (FPI) has rightfully gained prominence because of its ability to establish vital forward linkages for the agricultural sector. Using the E3-India model to gauge the regional implications of recent government initiatives in these sectors, this chapter finds that the sluggish implementation coupled with structural bottlenecks severely constrain the intended output of these policies, restricting their reach to the relatively well-off states. With the agricultural sector currently reeling under uncertain market conditions induced by the COVID-19 pandemic, accommodating for these losses implies that the policy targets need to be revisited.
