Chapter Chapter 5 in Rethinking Corporate Sustainability in the Era of Climate Crisis, 2021, pp 81-100 from Springer Abstract: Abstract Opening the second part of the book, which focuses on replacing sustainability-as-usual with a new, desired mode, this chapter examines the question of “why now?” contemplating why this point in time (the early 2020s) could be an inflection point for corporate sustainability. Looking at the broader environment in which companies operate, this chapter lays out key economic, social, and environmental trends and events that have led to this point, with a particular focus on the multiple crises that took place in 2020 and potentially made it a pivotal year. I then consider these trends and events as part of a transformation trajectory, using Moore et al.’s four-phase process of a deliberate transformation in a social-ecological system. Based on this framework, I make the case that we are already in the early stages of a transformative change, which is driven by a convergence of social and economic pressures, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the climate crisis. Looking forward, three potential pathways for transformation are presented: fixing, reforming, or revolutionizing the system.
