Chapter Chapter 5 in Not Paying the Rent, 2021, pp 75-94 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract After decades of competition, there was not a clear winner between progressive and conservative politics. Instead, Brazil had become a complex system in which a modern economy co-exists uncomfortably with colonial-resembling configuration. The Neanderthal in a spacesuit analogy permits the visualisation of the hybrid context permeating Brazil of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The chapter discusses the priority option for economic growth as a curse for overall development. Most importantly, it puts together the factors of economic success and disruption of the past four centuries to propose recommendations for future development.
