Chapter Chapter 3 in Economics of Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism Measures, 2022, pp 185-226 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Starting with information on various sources of available data on terrorism, the chapter presents trends and patterns of post-World War II modern-age terrorism from the 1970s when systematic data collection on terrorism began. Among other attributes, they include the number of terror incidents and deaths associated with suicide and other types of attacks, their geographical patterns, changes in pattern between the pre-9/11 and post-9/11 eras and longevity of terror groups. Special reliance is placed upon the freely available Global Terrorism Dataset, particularly the version released in early 2021 that records, at the global level, terror events and their characteristics from 1970 to 2019.
