A chapter in Handbook of Smart Energy Systems, 2023, pp 2867-2875 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter will serve as a systematic review of the extant literature on smart energy systems. This review will attempt to connect big data to energy systems to investigate the relationship and insights for academics and practitioners. This topic is critical due to the pressures of global warming, rising populations, and concerns with finite fossil fuel resources. Renewable energy, although attractive has slowed in implementation in absence of subsidies and infrastructure, still presents a potential solution to global energy concerns. Contextually, this will be explored within emerging markets which tend to struggle with issues of electrification and access to sustainable and reliable sources of power. Organizations have a plethora of resources, and capabilities at their disposal and management of big data can lead to valuable insights which create competitive advantage. The main implications are that smart grids, big data, and managing the interconnectedness of energy systems can lead to optimal performance in emerging markets which needs these solutions.
