A chapter in Handbook of Smart Energy Systems, 2023, pp 2155-2176 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The concept of smart grids has emerged as an innovative solution to address the persistent challenges faced by conventional power grids. Propelled by technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), wireless sensor networks (WSNs), and smart metering, it has facilitated the reliable, efficient, and sustainable provision of energy resources. However, concerns remain about such issues as security and P2P energy trading. As a decentralized network, blockchain has been recognized as a promising technology that can offer higher security, transparency, and immutability to smart grids. This chapter explains how blockchain can be applied to make the current grids more intelligent. Moreover, the significant barriers to implementing blockchain-based smart grids are discussed. In conclusion, the path forward for developing decentralized smart grids is described.
