Chapter Chapter 9 in Rethinking Asian Capitalism, 2022, pp 205-219 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Using data sets compiled in the previous two decades by the General Statistics Office of Vietnam, the chapter analyses the quantitative structure of income-based social classes in Vietnam and its evolution over the period 1998–2018. The contours of social stratification changed significantly in shape, from a pyramid in 1998 to a rhombus in 2018. The evolution of social stratification in the rural areas had lagged approximately one decade behind the urban areas yet it reached a turning point in the 2010s. The income-difference coefficient among social classes was increasing during the period. The rise was especially significant for the upper class and the upper-middle class compared to the lower classes. The income-difference coefficient was changing slowly in the 2000s but more rapidly in the 2010s.
