Abstract: Abstract was taught mathematics between the ages of 15 and 18 at the École Polytechnique in Paris, by first-rate teachers of his time. At the age of 26, he himself started teaching at this university. In the meantime, he worked as an engineer, for instance, in Paris on the construction of canals and an aqueduct and in Cherbourg on the construction of the new harbour.
