Chapter Chapter 3 in The Theory of the Jahn-Teller Effect, 2022, pp 31-75 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In the Jahn-Teller effect the behaviour of fermion particles is associated with structural changes, described by boson fields. Our task at present is to understand the mechanism of this interaction. A triatomic toy model is presented which clearly demonstrates the construction of the Jahn-Teller Hamiltonian, and reveals the basic symmetry of the boson-fermion interaction. Group theory provides the proper framework for a thorough analysis of these findings. The three kinds of degenerate irreducible representations (irreps) of the point groups are investigated, and their parent Lie algebras are identified. An overview is given of the violations of the Jahn-Teller theorem. The chapter concludes with a general group-theoretical proof of the theorem.
