Chapter 9 in Patent Intermediaries, 2022, pp 203-215 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter summarizes the main conclusions of this book and presents their main implications. For researchers, the market for patents represents a perfect setting in which to design solutions that could bring different players together in the best possible way. For institutions, we have indicated that there is room to make the patent system more efficient. For other participants, we draw the following conclusions: (1) Inventors should be aware that the simple matching services currently provided by patent intermediaries are insufficient. (2) Companies may wish to reconsider their patent strategy to select the conditions under which they cooperate with patent intermediaries more accurately to ensure that these conditions are advantageous. (3) Patent intermediaries should consider that the time for offering simple matching services is over. We expect that patent intermediaries will probably evolve into large organizations to benefit from economies of scale and scope. Finally, we propose some future directions for development of the market for patents. First, market designers could provide novel modes of transactions to resolve existing bottlenecks. Second, the patent system may require revision that attends to sectorial differences. Third, in-depth research on possible alternatives by which to extract value from patents could help to maximize the outcome of public spending. Fourth, new emerging technologies will have a strong impact on the patent system.
