Chapter Chapter 4 in Political Economy of Gender and Development in Africa, 2023, pp 91-121 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter explores the relationship between gender equality and financial access, as well as their relationship with economic development in Rwanda. Current literature on the topic suggests improvements to gender equality and financial inclusion are critical to creating sustainable economic growth in developing nations. While Rwanda ranks ninth in the world in gender parity, this chapter seeks to understand if this ranking reflects equality in financial access and economic development that can transform the lives of individuals. This chapter sets out to understand the relationship between development, financial inclusion, and gender equality. The influence of gender equality and financial inclusion on development prove to be significant for Rwanda, suggesting that institutional and societal factors heavily influence a nation’s ability to experience long-run growth.
