Chapter Chapter 8 in Political Economy of Gender and Development in Africa, 2023, pp 199-219 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter aims to give an explanation of sexual and gender based violence (SGBV) among Somali refugee women and their inner resilience to survive in the Dadaab refugee complex in Kenya. This chapter explores gender relations through narratives at camp settings taking into account structural variables such as religion and ethnicity based on a qualitative exercise of primary research conducted at the Dadaab refugee camp. These variables were analysed at the pre-conflict, conflict and displacement stages to understand the dynamic changes that prevailed in the lives of women in displaced camp settings. This chapter argues that SGBV among Somali refugee women in camp settings was part of a broader continuum of violence that existed prior to the conflict and displaced contexts. Resilience in displaced contexts, need to focus on the manner in which Somali refugee women survive and are resilient in the SGBV aftermath in their day to day lives.
