Abstract: Abstract The very existence of philanthropy as a sector is a sign and result of an unequal society that allows certain individuals or groups of individuals or organizations to accumulate inordinate amounts of wealth in comparison to other individuals, groups, or even nation states in the world. However, the very existence of philanthropy is somewhat of a movement toward alleviation of inequality through redistribution of resources. In this chapter, we explore how we can examine the role and importance of social justice philanthropy (SJP) focusing on the Indian context. We do this by reviewing historical roots of philanthropy and SJP both in the global and Indian contexts, mapping the philanthropy landscape and identifying key ecosystem players and highlighting the aspects which differentiate SJP models from traditional philanthropy models. We argue that it is important to explicitly consider the aspects of power and privilege and review organizational and management mechanisms by which philanthropies can move from charitable giving models to social justice models.
