Chapter Chapter 20 in Statistics for Empowerment and Social Engagement, 2022, pp 505-536 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The chapter aims to develop four lines of discussion on people’s relationships with statistics. A first line problematizes historical aspects related to the origins of statistics and its relationship with people’s lives. A second line discusses social aspects which enable people’s empowerment through the use of statistics. In the third line we address elements of the cognitive, socio-cultural, and affective dimensions of critical issues associated with people interpreting statistical data. In the fourth line, we present three examples of educational projects that involve teachers, students, and communities with the aim of employing Civic Statistics to initiate social actions. These projects are related to environmental themes and use Civic Statistics as a tool to empower people to achieve cultural changes in their social contexts.
