Abstract: Abstract Purpose: Situation Awareness (SA) is the level of awareness an individual has of the environment in relation to an occurrence. This paper seeks to establish a working relationship between the SA theory and the assessment of IEQ in the development of an IEQ assessment framework. Design/Methodology/Approach: The research design was primarily qualitative which involved the use of content analysis from articles in journals, books, reports. Search was conducted in PUBMED, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar and ResearchGate to find articles with Keywords: Situation Awareness, Indoor Environmental Quality, Classrooms, IEQ Assessment Frameworks. Articles were sieved and those that had the required information were used for this paper. Findings: Findings from this study indicates that just as SA is used in other fields, it can be applied in the assessment of IEQ in classrooms of basic schools using the three levels of SA: Level 1 SA – Perception of the elements in the environment; Level 2 SA – Comprehension of Current situation; Level 3 SA – Projection of future status. Research Limitations/Implications: Endsley’s three levels of Situation Awareness was examined in this paper. Practical Application: Application of Situation Awareness in the assessment of IEQ will facilitate the awareness and understanding of the internal environments of classrooms in basic schools by occupants of buildings and other stakeholders. Social Implication: The application of Situation Awareness in IEQ assessments promote the the solicitation of occupants views in the establishment of IEQ conditions in buildings. Originality/Value: Application of Situation awareness in the assessment of IEQ will help assessors to focus on parameters and factors in the environment that are relevant to the the health and well-being of occupants.
