Chapter 8 in Employee Relations and Trade Unions in Africa, 2023, pp 159-174 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter aims to understand the realities of social dialogue and trade unions in Morocco. Research contends that for social dialogue to enhance productivity, it requires constant dissemination of information between employers and employees on such matters as corporate plans and strategies, business trends and labour policies. Therefore, by reviewing the political, legal, social, and economic background of Morocco, the chapter examines the realities of social dialogue in Morocco and the role of trade unions in social dialogue. It concludes that social dialogue is important for driving effective labour relations in Morocco. Moreover, the chapter contends that for social dialogue to work, the state cannot be passive in ensuring that labour laws reflect contemporary international practices even when localised to fit in with the country’s distinct demographics.
