Chapter Chapter 7 in A Brief History of Mathematics, 2023, pp 227-269 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In mathematics and in the arts, the first half of the nineteenth century marks a crucial turning point in the long march to modernity. In poetry, the works of Edgar Allen Poe and Charles Baudelaire announced the appearance of an entire host of new stylistic and thematic concerns. In mathematics, the development of non-Euclidean geometry and noncommutative algebra shook the foundations of the established order.
