Chapter Chapter 1 in Job Security and Flexibility, 2023, pp 1-24 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The labour market is very different, in crucial aspects, from the “ordinary” economic markets of goods and services. While in the last cases, the invisible hand action is pervasive, in the labour market the free will, the idiosyncrasies and, most important, the ethical rules introduce constraints which must be taken into consideration if a good description of nature and functioning of such a market is required. This chapter introduces and examines the concept of rigidity in the labour market that is considered as embedding all the suggested peculiarities characterizing the labour market. To this end, the concept and typologies of rigidities are highlighted and assessed—nominal versus real, economic versus psychological, qualitative versus quantitative, normative versus emergent. In fact, the rigidities are put on the bases of conducting the behaviour on the labour market, both for employers and for employees.
