Leadership Challenges to Global Cooperation (A.S. Bhalla and Colin Mackerras)
A. S. Bhalla
Chapter Chapter 5 in National and Global Responses to the COVID-19 Pandemic, 2023, pp 165-188 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The third part of the book deals with global cooperation and action that is essential to control a truly global pandemic which has affected nearly all the countries on the planet. Chapter 5, discusses leadership challenges to such cooperation, which are manifested in US–China rivalry, efforts to deglobalize and replace global supply chains by regional and national ones, growing nationalism including vaccine apartheid. The last issue of nationalism and populism raises several relevant questions: what is the precise nature of the relationship between nationalism and the coronavirus pandemic; will the pandemic, by sharpening pre-existing inequalities, trigger ethnic conflict; and how the pandemic will either erode or reinforce the nation state?
