Abstract: Abstract In 1807, Jean-Baptiste Fourier had his say in the famous (going from the beginning of the XVIII century) dispute about the sounding string (Narasimhan, 1990, Ch. XII). According to he made a discovery that “caused the greatest perplexity and confusion among all mathematicians.”
