Abstract: Abstract This chapter outlines the evolution of the European integration process, giving an overview of the most important regulatory steps related to the banking and financial system culminated in the creation of the Banking Union. A focus is also given to the international financial crisis; its origins and impacts from the perspective of the European banking system and to the role played by supervision aimed at ensuring the financial stability.
