Chapter 4 in Leadership and Organisational Effectiveness Post-COVID-19, 2023, pp 51-63 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Operations management entails the systematic design, direction, and control of process flow that transforms inputs into services and products for internal and external customers (Krajewski et al. 2016, Operations Management: Processes and Supply Chain. 11th ed. Pearson Education Limited; Moscoso and Lago 2017, Operations Management for Executives. Realise the Full Potential of Your Organisation. McGraw Hill Education). The transformation of inputs into outputs in terms of products and services requires the intervention of human beings, and the effective coordination of the human capital element involves leadership as a functional area in management that has developed hitherto, in tandem with current global disruption, operations management as an essential business functional area needs to develop vis-à-vis the demands of effectiveness versus efficiency. With this evolution, the challenges occasioned by requisites of leadership as a significant pivot regarding leveraging operations as a source of competitive advantage in business organisations have arisen. However, globally, a dilemma that has confronted operational leadership as a fallout of the evolution of operations management has been how leadership can balance the intricate forces of demand and supply equilibrium vis-à-vis effectiveness and efficiency. This problem has become a recurring challenge for operational leadership because of globalisation, disruption, and innovation associated with incidents of COVID-19 and other global disruptions. The discourse in the chapter will include the nature of operations management evolution versus the need for operations leadership. The chapter discourse will also address how leadership from the operations dimension has navigated the intricate balance of effectiveness and efficiency amidst the daunting challenges of globalisation, disruption, and innovation.
