Abstract: Abstract The intuition behind the total cophenetic index is as follows: If the ancestral nodes of all pairs of leaves all have small depths, this implies that not many inner vertices separate them from the root. Therefore, in such a setting, all vertices are relatively close to the root (including the leaves), which makes the tree very balanced from an intuitive point of view, e.g., when thinking of a classic scale (cf. Chapter 1).
