Status as Legal Tender
Leo Kriese
Chapter Chapter 5 in Central Bank Digital Currency, 2023, pp 69-79 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter discusses the status of a digital euro as legal tender. It explains the concept of legal tender and how this status can be acquired. Furthermore, the chapter analyses whether the digital euro can be legal tender in the same way as euro banknotes and euro coins are. In addition, it examines whether such an unrestricted status appears expedient, in particular with regard to mandatory acceptance. To ensure consistency, the chapter also evaluates the status of euro cash as legal tender.
