Chapter Chapter 6 in The Palgrave Handbook of International Trade and Development in Africa, 2024, pp 89-107 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Energy is essential for economic development; therefore, its imports and exports play an important role in the economic growth of nations. The energy sector includes renewable and non-renewable sources of energy which essentially form part of international trade. Countries trade among themselves using different energy mixes. This study seeks to understand energy and international trade in the African context. The study focuses on renewable and non-renewal energy and capital flow investments in Africa. It highlights Africa’s energy security situation and its relationship with international trade. The study similarly sheds light on energy demand and the balance of payments situation in Africa. Finally, it explores the mechanism of energy war in Africa and provides the channels through which this can be addressed. The study draws lessons from this discussion and provides policy direction to improve energy trade and security in Africa.
