Chapter Chapter 4 in Servant Leadership, 2025, pp 57-73 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This purpose of the chapter is to provide conceptual clarity on the key contentious issues associated with servant leadership, which, to the best of my knowledge, have not been discussed in sufficient depth until now. This chapter begins with an updated definition and discussion of servant leadership, followed by a delineation of the most common arguments against the construct of servant leadership. The conclusion is that as we advance, servant leadership scholars need to study servant leadership in a discrete context (e.g., work designs and social groupings), meso context (e.g., industry characteristics, organizational demography), and omnibus context (national culture, cross-cultural comparison). The inclusion of contextContextualleadership in servant leadership studies can be theoretically framed and empirically tested as a main effect, a moderator, an outcome, or a constant background factor. The field would also benefit from studies that observe servant leadership behaviors in situ relative to those of the followers.
