Abstract: Abstract This chapter examines the contextual influences on corporate governance systems, emphasizing that governance cannot be separated from its environment. The chapter outlines how different contextual factors, such as financial systems, legal frameworks, and political-institutional systems, shape corporate governance. The financial system, characterized by its complexity and international interconnectedness, plays a critical role in providing the necessary resources and influencing economic processes. The chapter distinguishes between bank-based systems (common in Europe and Japan) and market-based systems (prevalent in Anglo-Saxon countries) and highlights their respective implications for corporate governance structures. The chapter also compares common law and civil law systems, noting their historical roots and differences in judicial decision-making and legislative processes. The influence of political-institutional contexts is examined through four different models of governance: Anglo-Saxon, Japanese, Germanic, and Latin, each shaped by its unique cultural, religious, and historical background.
