Cooperation Between China and Côte d’Ivoire in the Field of Road Infrastructure from 2012 to 2023: Prospects for the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)

Abstract: Abstract In 2018, the member countries of the African Union signed the memorandum of understanding and Côte d’Ivoire formally joined the BRI. Nevertheless, it had already been developing relations with China for several years. These relations were mainly focused on agriculture, telecommunications, trade and the economy. But after the post-electoral crisis in Côte d’Ivoire (2011), China’s achievements in the country focused particularly on road infrastructure, some of which had been damaged by the socio-political crises (from 2002). Since 2012, we have seen the construction of the Abidjan-Grand-Bassam and Tiébissou-Bouaké motorways; the asphalting of the Odiéné-Gbélegban and Agboville-Rubino-Céchie roads; and the tracing and reprofiling of major feeder roads such as the one linking Ogoudou-Guiguidou, which has had a major impact on the local population. Compared with the infrastructure projects announced in the BIR, Côte d’Ivoire is likely to take advantage of this initiative to strengthen its road infrastructure network, whether urban, interurban or rural.
